The Historical Empathy Measure (HEM) is a research-based, validated assessment developed as part of a randomized controlled trial to study impacts on Grade 8–10 students’ history learning. It was created by Education Development Center, Inc., in partnership with The WNET Group, the American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and Electric Funstuff. While its primary purpose is to support research, teachers and other educators may also find it useful in classroom settings. However, the HEM is not intended for use as a high-stakes assessment or as a critical component of students’ grades.
